sam,
step away from that wiper switch!
If a car has been standing for a good while, the wiper spindles can rust and seize.
If the wiper motor manages to move them far enough to disengage the 'self park' switch built into the motor, it won't take too many minutes for the motor to burn out.

Your best bet is to put some penetrating oil or WD40 into the spindles and gently ease them to and fro until the rust grip is released.

When you do try the switch, have one of the leads on the battery loose, so that it can be removed quickly if the wiper mechanism stalls...

It will be OK to bypass the flasher relay to determine if the problem lies with the lights, but remove the plastic lenses so that they aren't cooked by being subjected to 21 watts for any length of time.

ken
ps. Was it really warm down south today, to be working 'bare'?
It was blowing a gale and proper parky up here...

there really aren't many other electrics fitted! The wiper motor seems to be seized, it emits a clunk and thats about it.

My bug bare is the indicators

Is it safe to bypass the flasher unit so I can constantly illuminate the indicators to figure out what's wrong, presuming the switch is working?

Thanks for that Ken :)

I've noticed that the vent flap doesn't close so I think I'll take the interior trim out and have a look at that too.

Looks like jobs for the weekend will be:
Further fiddling with indicators
Working out what's wrong with vent flap
De-seizing wiper spindles
ensure brake bleeed nipples are loose
bleed brakes
maybe have a look at the rust on the rear panel

Halfords are doing 3 for 3 on cleaning products at the moment so I picked up 2 500ml bottles of G3 and a 1L bottle of Mer for £20 :)

I also got some U-Pol Acid 8 which I'm looking forward to seeing in action.

Since when do Halfords stock G3? I always look but never find any...

 yeah 3 for 2

Well, it was news to the girl at the check out too. She said "oh err Idunno hon-aye" so I went to the bike hut where some kid spoke to a guy under the desk (?) who clicked his fingers for another kid and we all went searching.

And found it. Eventually.

Seriously are any of there employees a) over 18 or b) given any knowledge about their stock at all?

Here's the answer to your question:

Be warned though, when I did ask at parts desk, they said there's at least a weeks wait on a radiator cap. :P
