Post Re: 2CV Crosser
yours is an ex racing shell so most of the prep should have been done

remove all the stone chip PU stuff from wheel arches and bulkhead
sandblast the shell to within an inch of its life
buy a set of hole cutters
chop every bolt so its only just long enough

loose all brackets and captive nut and heater tubes etc that are no longer of use

The Shark, and Rambo were two cars that had been totally stripped and both had to carry a lot of ballast to be legal ...and tht was before they upped the weight fo the people that couldnt be arsed to prep the car

one car had a 3mm bottom skin on one of its chassis...allegedly, so the weight was where it was needed..or rather in the least inconvenient place

Thanks Sean, once I've straightened it I'll set about all that. The minimum weight is 465kg, although there's only half a car compared to the uk racers....

Does the fuel tank have to be standard?

Don't forget the weight of the driver. You'll have to cut your hair!

Yes, plastic with standard filler neck.

is that why some old racers used to drill their door handles? or was this for aesthetic appeal or some ergonomic / anthropometric use?

I often wondered how they drilled them so neat! anyone got a set going begging i'm your man, i think they look ace!

can you single skin the front doors since you have a roll cage? or strip them then make some lighter weight re-enforments? all the weight of a shell is at the front so I would start by looking around the bulk head and lop off anything not needed or over engineered!

Rust, I think i have some tyres and rims for you as discussed. Will double check next time i'm over near my grans place, and when she is out!

Shelf, instrument bracketry?

When you think about it - the front of the shell is the only bit with any real metal in it - plus, of course, the windscreen's normally in when you're moving a "bare" shell about.

Thanks Tim, it'll be a help!

Doorhandles are removed completely along with the latch assy. Doors are held closed with leather straps. Afaik the rules don't allow lightening of panels, hence they use the lightest panels they can find. I'm not allowed fibre front wings, they must be steel and only cut to the minimum the rules state.

I think I'll take what Seans said on board and shotblast all the panels, let them rust for a few months and shotblast them again so they're almost paper thin. I'll remove everything from the bulkhead and use .5 ally sheet to seal the bulkhead, vent flap etc. I'm tempted to remake the inner/outer bulkhead from the thinnest steel I can lay my hands on, along with a few other bits. I like the idea of cutting boltheads down, the wiring loom will be made as short as possible and the bare minimum possible (enough to start the car, run the brake light and anti crash light and nothing else.

I'll go and have a really good look at the shell and speak to Sebfou about what's allowed.

Who for...? <grin>

Let's face it, Russ - you're not going to be competitive, just there for giggles - so might as well not break your neck to save a kilo or two.

You're right, and Im completely aware of that, however, I could rock up with a heap of shit having put no effort in. I don't want to roll like that, I'd rather build the best car I have the facilities and parts to build, in every respect, that do something half arsed, look back in twenty years time and feel embarrased about what I've done. It's not often I give a shit about the condition of my cars, but this is something I want 'right'.

Ironically, it's the car with the highest chances of being completely destroyed....
