 Re: My old Blue Bamboo
My first 2cv had the 'box unwind. The place I worked at had a long narrow car-park, so I reversed down it and it 'happened' I had another 'box, and 3wks later...Bingo! 'Box number two unwound, but was able to be fixed in situ

 Re: My old Blue Bamboo
I'm not sure on this 'fixed in situ' thing, but if it could be done it would save a lot of work. Then again I can't see me trusting a gearbox that has let me down once already, I'd rather change it.
The advantage of the spare gearbox that I have is that it's a reconditioned dyane unit, so it might just be better for the motorway trips that I often do. Having said that there's a good chance that I'll now be fitting the recon gearbox and putting the car up for sale come the new year as my circumstances are changing (yet again), and consequently my patience is also quite thin these days... which means that I'm not up for the sort of hassle which comes with running an old car any more.
I'm trying to distract myself from the negative thinking by attempting to spot unintentional oxymorons in the newspapers, today I found 'Military intelligence' and 'Labour leadership'.

 Re: My old Blue Bamboo
nooo dont sell your 2cv,
wont your wife be annoyed as it was your wedding car?
i get fustrated sometimes, with things like rust, and i think, well i wouldnt have this if i bought a cheap modern car, but its par for the course, and you get more smiles per gallon in a 2cv, at meetings, when you see others in theres, etc, i know the ripped pants sit is annoying, i twat my back in it from time to time, and it hurts!!

 Re: My old Blue Bamboo
I've rewound a gearbox and while I took it out to do it, it can be done in situ. I'm sure one of the experts would give much better advice than me. But... To start with why not take off the lid, and look at the gubbins inside? There are instructions online how to rewind, if you have a replacement box in the sidelines it can't hurt to have a look first can it? Basically whats happened is a collar has come of its threads, you need to screw it back on. I found the collar straight away, it was fairly obvious on mine, but depending on circumstances you may have to do some fiddling about to get it back on. Have you tried google for instructions? Mike Phelan gave me some excellent advice when I did mine. http://www.2cvstuff.com/Files/2cvgearbox.pdfhttp://www.dollydreamers.co.uk/Unwinding%20Unwound.htmOf course you could aska specialist for a quote?

 Re: My old Blue Bamboo
I might take a look inside the box before I pull it out completely to see if there's anything I can do with it. Worst case scenario is that I have to pull out and replace the gearbox with the spare, a lot of work when I've only just put it all back together, but it won't heal up on its own I suppose! The possibility of selling the car has arisen through my (almost certainly) having to move house again. I need to find a smaller, cheaper property to live in (as I lease them), and this one is costing a fortune. If the next place has no garage for example, then both the car and half a ton of equipment and spares will have to go. It's happened to me before, and I lose a fortune each time. Also, watching the way the wind is blowing in this country I need to step up my attempts to get out of it, so I need a van (transit sized) as a practical tool, a 'hobby car' will become a luxury I just can't afford any longer I'm afraid. The wife isn't happy about my even considering selling, after all she has taken it to heart, even given the car a name, but I always remember the advice given about horses in an old cowboy film: "Don't give anything a name that you might have to shoot and eat"And unfortunately these days, not all cowboys are in El Paso.
