French cars wouldn't have had stamped number plates in in the 60s they were painted onto a black painted panel. My '66 AZU still sports its painted French registration.

Painted plates fell out of use in the UK in the mid thirties

C'mon Jonathan, the way some drivers/riders behave, aren't they simply asking for it. For instance to drive around not wearing a seatbelt and with a mobile phone planted to one's ear is like sticking a placard on the bonnet proclaiming 'I don't give a F'. Yet when they get a ticket, they winge. They know the law so why gripe when they are nabbed?

As you may know, I was in the Job for twenty years but retired ten years ago, and concentrated in the main on traffic issues. I've lost track now on dates and stuff but the reflective plates came out half way though the 'L' reg year. Small numberplates always was an irritant with me and itallic/wrongly spaced lettering another. My attitude to offences was this. If I was doing what they'd done, would I expect to get done. If the answer was 'Yes', then there ya go. I won't mention strongly tinted headlight covers on motorbikes or popping wheelies up the High Street. What do they expect? Sympathy?

The last time I posted regarding the seats I had resprayed the frames grey to match the rest of the trim, and restrung them with new rubbers, backs and bases. Since then I managed to locate some nice thick upholstery foam and bought a few rolls of it ready to build them up.

The old stuff was saved to use as templates, although some of it had completely disintegrated which meant that I had to guess the rear seat back. I drew around the various parts and transferred the newly cut foam sections onto the painted frames.

I think I might have mentioned this stuff before but if not take note. It's from Frost.co.uk and it sticks like mad, it's so powerful that It's too powerful if you see what I mean, but anything stuck with this stuff stays stuck.

I used just a couple of dabs here and there on the seat frames and then sat the foam in position.

And same with the front seats.... before what I'd seen coming all along happened, the seat covers aren't ready. Mrs. Nail insisted that I was not to buy any, as with her machining skills (last used 1986) she would knock together some nice covers in no time. In a way she was right, because at no time has she done them. That's not entirely true, she has done one for the back seat, but I've gone on seat strike now until they're all done.

After fitting new door trim strips to all four doors I decided to do something else, something that I hadn't done the other day actually when I fitted the roof. I wanted to give the roof fabric time to stretch out before making the two holes in it at the rear and screwing in the press studs.
For the press studs to be fitted you obviously have to make two holes in the fabric of your brand new roof, and as always It seemed a little crude to do so. I believe that originally Citroen had fitted small plastic seats under these studs which are always missing on cars of this age, so I used the cut in half rubber grommet trick once again to good effect.

If you find a grommet of the right size so that it sits inside the cup of the upturned press stud it acts as a sort of flexible gasket. I tried a larger grommet at first but when screwed down tight the thing squashes to twice its size, so this smaller one was perfect.

This is a close up of how it looks sat on the back of the stud, then like I said screw it down tight and it squashes flat and expands to create a decent (waterproof?) base for the press stud that is mounted over the roofs fabric. The larger grommet I tried squashed out too far and was visible under the stud.

Yep. I seem to remember someone has re-manufactured them but can't remember who it was. Anyway, It's a warm evening and I'm now off out for a glass of beer....only the one mind. ;)
