 Re: My old Blue Bamboo
I think in a 2cv you're fairly unlikey to be stopped with old style plates. If any policeman, or any non 2cver for that matter, could tell the difference between a 1960 2cv and a 1980 2cv I'd be very surprised. Impressed even.

 Re: My old Blue Bamboo
I'd guess most cops know a (prefix) F reg car needs newer style plates than a (suffix) H reg car though. Unless you've got a private number, you're showing the year. And french style plate are still wrong on a 1960 car anyway, aren't they?

 Re: My old Blue Bamboo
The only thing I don't like is not being "allowed" the correct font on replacement plates. The post 2001(?) is thinner to allow for those pointless little flags. It doesn't look right on older cars.
Interestingly enough I *think* the welsh are able to choose between a Welsh flag OR the EU one, so push for equal rights Old-Nail if your flag does cause problems!!

 Re: My old Blue Bamboo
That's exactly why I did it. Besides, the EU is not my cuppa tea. I prefer independent nation states each with their own unique national traits, that's what makes us all different and interesting. There was also something about the number plate makers name and phone number which wasn't shown at the bottom on my plates. This made me think wouldn't it be nice if number plates were necessary simply to clearly and legibly show our registration numbers? Nah, I'm being silly now aren't I.

I did the England flag deliberately too as I didn't want that daft EU circle. I'm not sure about French plates though I can't picture how they look? Anyone got a piccy? I'm afraid you've been wrongly advised. The English flag and the letters ENG most defintely ARE legal. This subject - and the same applies to Scotland and Wales - was all discussed and sorted out some years ago with the EEC authorities. I believe the French black/white or black/polished aluminium number plates would look superb on your car - and the roof colour to my mind is perfect - and I'd suggest that only a really pedantry Police Officer would pick you up on it. There are a trillion worse offences going on out there. MoT's? Ah well that's another thing.

 Re: My old Blue Bamboo
You can use the English,Welsh, Scottish or Northern Ireland flag/lettering (Eng. Cym. Scot. NI)on UK plates, that is fine within the UK. Where the legal issue applies, is abroad. In other countries, and that includes other EU countries, you must have a GB sticker on the boot of the car, if the number plate fails to show GB with the EU emblem/flag(Gold stars on blue back ground), to it's left side. You can legally show a nation flag on the right side of the number plate(as far as I'm aware), with the GB/EU emblem/flag, to the left side.

 Re: My old Blue Bamboo
Jonathan You surprised me with that so a did a bit of searching and you're right. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_re ... at_BritainGB + Euro stars = legal in Europe All the other alternatives = legal here but not in Europe when a GB sticker is required. My experience is this. After driving/riding regularly in Europe for 45yrs now, and once living in Germany for five years, my present 2CV is my very first vehicle to carry a GB sticker. Now whether I wasn't stopped was luck or chance, I don't know, but it really isn't that important IMO.

 Re: My old Blue Bamboo
Paul, seems that the police in North Yorks have been taking more than a passing interest in the regulations regarding number plates. I had a customer here today from the Leyburn area, who mentioned that during a recent motorcycle trials event, the police pulled over 2 of the competitors and issued £60 fixed penalty notices for having rear number plates which were too small. At the MOT station I use, the tester mentioned that a car had come in for test with 2 replacement plates supplied for him to fit, since the 'vanity' plates it had been sporting had earned the lady owner a £60 'on the spot' fine earlier that week. Doesn't a vehicle have to be 'pre '73' in order to be able to use those old style plates? So, put illegal number plates on if you wish, but when visiting this neck of the woods, don't be too surprised if you're required to make a mandatory contribution to the chief inspector's yacht fund... ken Paul Narramore wrote: I believe the French black/white or black/polished aluminium number plates would look superb on your car - and the roof colour to my mind is perfect - and I'd suggest that only a really pedantry Police Officer would pick you up on it.
