I was always warm enough sleeping in the Acadiane with simple camping roll mats glued to the roof. Very basic indeed, but it worked, even in the middle of winter, so anything from that level up and you should be fine.

We never bothered insulating our old Acad - and it was toasty in winter. The only things you needed to remember were to leave a window slightly open (else the roof would get covered with condensation - and it'd start raining inside - or, at a new year camp, freeze) - and, most importantly, NEVER LET BARE FLESH TOUCH COLD METAL.

Has anybody else who's ever used a van as a camper

I've been looking at 12v car heaters which seem like a good idea too.

I've got to get all my camping stuff together this week and try and fit it into the car somehow, maybe making some cupboards or storage areas for it all, also, I'd like to incorporate my stereo and a sub into the back of the car somehow.

edit: Thanks Matt, to be honest any sort of coitus is going to be tricky!

1 yes but not citroen, lined with closed cell and then 6mm ply or it gets noisy in the rain

2 yes and when you wake up cold in the morning you can work up a sweat pushing it

3 you have plenty space under that frame fit the top boards but hinge them in the middle so you can either lift the head end from the rear doors or the foot end over the wheel well from the boot( but youll probably sleep head to boot (unlike the trial in the garage)

4 better keeep the old playboy by the seatbelt mounts for solo action then

i did something similar in the 2cv 25mm sq frame that runs from the small step in the boot forward to the seat backs all the dirty crap and stuff went under and all the camping stuff and huge collection of shoes and outfits that were taken to CZ, went on top.

do you know what, those last few pics, this is looking proper. Im impressed it all seems to fit so well, more room in an ami estate than you credit. Top work Russ.

Tents are so much of a pin in the arse, this has got to be a good plan.

Thanks Matt.

It's not quite as nicely done as the pictures would have you believe, mainly because I'm useless as woodwork. I won't be able to work on it this weekend but I hope to get it almost finished next week. I am going to pop round and see some sticker companies tomorrow to get a few quotes for the signwriting done. I've still got to close the holes where the back doorhandles once were, and that means dicking about with the spunk of belzebub (body filler, to those who can use it) which I must admit I've been putting off because I'm so convinced I'll make a hash of it. Then I've got to have my pants pulled down to buy some rattlecans to paint the doorhandle holes and the rear 'windows'. £12 a can! I'll want at least 4!
