Fame at last! Several of the current french 2cv magazines have some coverage of Giel, and '2CV Magazine' gives me a mention. Obviously being journalism it's not all correct, apparently I'm scottish amongst other things :? .

'Deuche' magazine's article leads with quite a good picture of our encampment, I think I remember it being taken by a bloke standing on the bottle bank opposite, and also has a pic of Max serving drinks from the toilet. I haven't bought a copy, but it's the jul-aug-sept edition.

I'm now slightly worried that a bit of heavy braking will see my gear linkage disappearing through the dashboard, closely followed by a gearbox shaped lump being formed in the bonnet. :? I could probably attach a piece of chain across the rubber to prevent the worst happening, but I'm thinking I may have to redesign the mounting anyway.

Well the inevitable did happen, the rubbers tore, and the gearbox is currently being restrained by a lenth of rope around the chassis crossmember.

So I'm trying to find some better rubbers, something with a bolt that runs through the middle and a metal sleeve around it, like this;

They're commonly used in rally cars where the mounts have to cope with all sorts of forces from the cars being thrown about. They're used for some suspension bushes, although suspension bushes are smaller and wouldn't allow so much movement. I'm trying to find some that would allow me to buy a tube off the shelf that they push into, to save getting one machined up.
I looked at the wishbone bushes used in locosts as I know you can get the mounting tubes, but the commonly used ones are herald bushes and are only 1" diameter, which I don't think would give enough movement.

Does anyone have any experience from outside 2cvs of where I can find something suitable, probably about 1 1/2", 40mm, diameter.

I'm sure somebody said the 'boite de vitesse' wouldn't last, well what do you know  .

The syncro on 3rd's been rubbish since I put it in, and there's none on 1st, although that could be an original feature. And then during August's trip around the UK it decided that it didn't like engaging 2nd, not even noisily, it would change up from 1st ok, but not down, which made it a real pig to drive. It's also been rumbling a bit, although hard to tell exactly how much over the engine noise, and making quite a loud kind of 'klok-klok-klok' noise when idling in neutral, which goes away when you put your foot on the clutch.

All things considered I was a bit worried about it lasting the trip to Spa which is around a 1000 miles, so I'm swapping it for another LNA box.

So far I've found this collection of bits in the bottom of the box, I may split the casings completely if I get time, but so far your guess as to their previous occupation is as good as mine. The largest piece is about 8mm.

Ya 2cv's gone and craped itself!

Now could be a good time to try a longer ratio GS 4speeder. That way you could send any other LNA boxes you find over to me

Did you get the rubber mounts you where looking for?

No, not yet, hopefully I'll sort some better mountings at the same time as a GSA box. For now I'll just put a bolt all the way through the bush.

Every day's a school day. It would seem that for some reason citroen felt the need to change the gear lever on LNA boxes over their lifetime. The box I'm taking out is date stamped '81 and I would presume made along side the GSA 5-speeds, it has a blanking plug where the 5-speeders have the speedo cable, and also a taller gear change 'turret' as per the GSAs.

The replacement box is presumably older, the gear change is lower and there's no sign of any option of a speedo cable on the diff.

First 'box behind, earlier replacement in front.

To correspond with the taller gearchange turret, the latter 'box also has a longer lever, so now the gear linkage needs modding as well.

I have a question on these LNA/G-series boxes, as i have acquired one from across the creek, thx Vikingbastard
Is there any Bearing to replace/Cleaning to do/Adjustment to check/Peening required while it is out and accessible?

Cheers
Harley

Sorry Harley, not much help on that one. I can only suggest the obvious stuff, rear cover and bell housing come off quite easily without disturbing anything, so you can check for bits gone awol and clean out the 'sediment'.

I found some pics on my camera of the broken gearbox, they're about a month old now but I thought I might as well put them here. I took it apart to see what had given up, I found where the 'bits' had come from but couldn't really say what they used to do, except that they probably helped engage 2nd gear somehow. I suspect they broke when I smashed it into 2nd and dumped the clutch, in an attempt to bump start it after it died on the approach to a round about,(I think it was this that finished the mounts off too). When it was behaving like a complete bastard on the way up to snetterton.

Image

There are three identical missing lugs around the circumference of what ever this bit is. Actually it's still not that easy to see exactly where, but that little row of three teeth used to be four teeth.

Image

Only other bit of damage I could find was this on the outside of the bearing at the front of what I think citroen call the idler shaft. Some bit of swarf has been fretting between the bearing and casing, don't think it was causing a problem but suggests the bearing isn't held very tightly.

Image

So long as the car wasn't moving this 'box selected all gears fine, and still did so after I removed it. Rather disappointingly it didn't anymore after being opened and put back together. That's the second time I've achieved that, opening a citroen box 'for a quick look' and having it not select gears when put back together. Luckily I wasn't intending to reuse either, but it doesn't give me much confidence to open a 'box I am intending to use. More practice needed methinks.
