Smiffy,
was that flywheel mounted on the engine when you collected your 'self assemble
van kit'? ;)
If it wasn't, might be worth checking that it will fit, as those 435 engines I've seen
had a flywheel the same as that shown in Geert's photograph...

Ha-ha! Pesky self-assembly! I vowed to stay away from Ikea projects - and look what I bought instead!

Yes, the flywheel was mounted, and was married to a drummer gearbox. I'll check the bores when I get a chance, but I suspect that's a 602 engine.

Wonder if 2CVGB has any record of my van? They might have some info...

In that case, it's definitely a 602 engine, with any 'jiggery pokery' confined
to making the 435 heat exchangers fit the larger engine.

The parts of the crankcase casting visible in your photographs look like 602
rather than 435 as well...

What do 435 heat exchangers look like? The ones on the van engine look just like any other 602 exchangers that I've ever seen.

602 heat exchangers have a different angle . They are wider at the end , not the heatexchanger it self, but the angle between the two! this is 425 and 435 | | ( parallel ) and this is 602 \ / . Hope you'll understand.

Here is the explanation on Jeroen Cats'site : http://www.cats-citroen.net/citroen_aty ... ition.html

Extensive measuring has revealed that the cylinders on this engine have a 74mm bore. So, by my, ahem, powers of deduction I have reason to conclude that this engine is either an M28, an M28/1 or an M4. Now, how can I tell exactly which type it is?

The carb is a Solex 34 PICS 6... so I'm guessing that the engine is an M28/1.

I'd say the exhaust would come over the top of the fan housing on the right-hand side (as you're stood in front of car looking towards the engine), on an M4. On the later engines (M28s), the exhaust goes towards the back of the engine-bay and into the silencer/crossbox under the gearbox.

Clean the top of the pistons, you should find 8.5 there as confirmation (x2) that it's an M28/1 engine.

Wonder if they left the 2CV4 type gearbox in place when the engine was swapped?

Time to dig out your deerstalker hat and sneak up on the input shaft...

Aside from Jonathan's point about the manifold. On an M4 you'll be looking for 'flat' manifold mounting points on the heads, cast aluminium cylinder heads and, most obviously, the fuel pump is on the starboard side (the 'left' if you're looking down at the engine from the front).

An M4 will also have M7 studs to attach the fan stone guard to the front cowling or no stone guard at all.

M28s have the fuel pump on the port side ('right') as you look at it from the front and (if it has a fan stone guard) it will be attached with bolts.

That might be a good indicator as you cannot attach 435 or M28 fan cowling to an M4 without hacking it about due to the position of the fuel pump and the much bigger fan on an M4.

Oh and I much prefer Port and Starboard as they're always the same. This left and right business is daft, it depends where you're standing and don't even get me started on 'offside' and 'nearside' I've never understood that let alone when dealing with imported cars on British roads... and what if you do a lhd to rhd conversion?!

OK. It's definitely not an M4, then.
