Synthetic is Alkyd based. It isn't noxious, it's just crap. The stuff on your skirting boards is synthetic alkyd. Like 250 says, once synthetic is on there you can only paint over it with more synthetic, anything else will react. Same with enamel, which are the two most popular brush-on formulas.

samfieldhouse wrote: is it that noxious? It isn't "that" noxious but as a general principle anything you get airborne as a fine mist or dust is better off collected in a mask than in your lungs. Be it filler dust or paint spray mist. As ever the effect is cumulative. The dust from some timbers is carcinogenic, aluminium dust is linked to senile dementia. A mask is cheaper than a lung transplant, even at cut price Indian sub continent rates, or so I'm reliably informed.....

Synthetic's great if the whole car's brush painted with it, like my blue 2cv.
Great work there, Sam. Fancy tackling my Acadiane when you're done?

I wouldn't have thought the bulkhead is even testable. The car has a separate chassis, the shell can be as rotten as you like providing your feet don't go through the floor boards, the seat belt mounts are OK and there are no sharp edges that can catch a pedestrian.

The bulkhead is testable on "Hetty". The steering column is attached to it and the battery tray (battery security comes into the test) is on the bulkhead too.
On a later 2CV, the bulkhead is very testable due to the master cylinder etc.

Great work there, Sam. Fancy tackling my Acadiane when you're done? I'm only prettying her up really! Bought paint to do the interior roof last night. It turned into a bit fo a saga All i wanted was satin metal paint, preferably in grey. Could I find it? no. They did however have: celadon duck eggpebble beachdreamtimeWhat.The.Duck??? Had to call the girlfriend to come and pick one. Shops are legally required to have ramps for diabled people to get in the shops to enable better access, yet they can have totally obscure product names that completely inhibit access to people who have sight difficulties. (i'm colourblind) Also ordered some soundproofing - was going to get some Brown Bread (google it) but its rather expensive. Halfrauds had some own brand stuff at £12/m but a quick ebay search (yay for iphone) revealed that I could get the same stuff for £3.75 a meter Result! Ordered some bits from Roy yesterday which should be here soon so hopefully I can get the bumper and wings on this weekend. Droped the valence panel off at the paint mixers too so they can get a good match, the paint should be ready 'in a while...' Russ rang yesterday to say he'd had a trial fit with the rear panels but they seem a bit wonky. Or rather, the wings are straght, but Hetty's bum is very wonky... we'll investigate further this weekend.

Where did you find the soundproofing for £3 odd a metre, Sam? I'm looking to redo my dash area and under bonnet this year.
