But there's one that stands head and shoulders above others.

Very much so. Personal experience in my case, but backed up by many other first-hand tales.

I took it to be no more than rumour, or perhaps sour grapes at the success of an underdog 'newcomer', (given that in 2cv circles even after fifteen years or so one is still considered to be an upstart.)

Definitely not.

Post Re: at what point do you call it a day?
I bought my first 2cv this year from a guy off e bay.The write up and pictures were just what i was lookig for.Went to see the car, gave it a good looking over, drove o.k. so i bought it.The car came with a new mot and recipts for work carried out in May (new chasiss, floors, sills, engine work),a partial restore was on the recipt.Just over 2500.00 was spent on it.Used the car for a few months, then decided to strip it down,re spray, overhaul brakes, suspension etc. When i started to remove the wings (front)i was pleasantly supprised,no rust anywhere, chasiss was as described, galvanised, floors all new,all looking good. Then i took the rear wings off and noticed some corrosion just in front of the wheels, where the sill meets the wheel arch.Gave it a poke, instant hole, bothsides.
My point is,the work was carried out by a 2cv garage, they charged a lot of money to do the work, but they didnt repair the holes i had found. They must have seen them because they were painted with underseal. It is a great shame because the rest of the work seems to be ok(apart from some missing chasiss fixing bolts and bumper bracket bolts)The rest of the car is rust free so it spolit what would have been a good job.

Do you know Sean reading this post has changed my opinion. Like a bomber pilot who didn't really think of the poor beggars below, I always accepted that it was the individuals job to suss out what they were buying rather than blame the outcome on the seller.

Reading this post angered me though, an anger reserved for the folks that do push out botched crap on the unsuspecting, there has to be more than just business considerations, there should be ethics involved also.

That's one of the reasons why an ever-increasing number of people wouldn't buy a lightbulb off the company that I'm sure are responsible for this "restoration"...

The sooner they leave the 2cv scene, the better.

Well said that man! I'm sure we know exactly who you mean - was the t-shirt @ Halloween Camp a clue?

Never buy a 2cv off a DIY pumpkin?

Oh, the back. I couldn't possibly say, since I never actually saw it...

that car hadnt been through the usual suspect, had come via another citroen specific garage but not a 2cv specialist

main joy was the 1mm plate welded over the rusty original floors looked great from inside but the box sections needed doing for MOT, new floors to be let in which took out the bulkhead and seat box and part of the sill

windscreen was done cause i might as well while im at it, only to find the mess behind the main box section

just waiting for it to stop raining so i can get on ith it

You'd have liked the gem that was on the Bamboo I used to have. From underneath, the floors were flat, from the top on the passengerside, they had the ciorrect intentations and fluting, on the drivers side, the fluting was raised, and the wrong way round. It'd had a passenger floor welded in upside down.
