So now I have a second 2cv outside the house. Picked up this D*lly from Rotherham yesterday. Was an easy and uneventful 5 hour drive back to Devon.




There are one or two things I need to sort, but overall it's pretty good. The body is very good with only a slight bit of rust along the rear light panel. Could do with a bit of a polish all over and there's a couple of small patches where a paint touch up is needed.
The clutch biting point is high, I've adjusted the cable today but it could be better. I'll probably put a new clutch in soon.
One or two of the exhaust joints are blowing, but the PO had recently fitted a new cross box so I expect they'll just need redoing.
The final thing which I didn't notice on the test drive a couple of weeks ago is a clunk sometimes when turning the steering wheel. I looked at it today and there is a little play in the steering, not worked out where yet, I'll take another look when it's not raining.

Not sure yet, I need to get to the bottom of the steering issue first. I've greased the kingpins but it's still not quite right.

I jacked the car up yesterday to have a better look at the steering. The track rod end ball joints seem pretty solid, no ill movement when the steering is turned or when I rock the wheels.

But when rocking the wheels back and forth quickly, the other end of the track rods do move. Where the inner ends of the rods connect to the rack, the pins move in and out of the rack, only by a millimetre or so, but it's enough to make a noise. It was fairly dry too so I've greased it up, but it's not right.

Having a second car as a reference is quite handy. The steering rack and track rods on the other car are solid and do not move in the same way.

Would this be wear in the rack that requires a rebuild or is there something else I could try first?

Also, even after greasing, the drivers side kingpin seems a little loose/worn. The top of the wheel moves in and out approximately 10mm. I'm assuming that's going to require a new pin!

Sounds like it could use a new pin and a new ring on the rack, or maybe also the balls an cups at the rack.

Thank you. I'm going to speak to Rick Pembro about it next week and see what he thinks. If the rack needs rebuilding and engine and box are coming out, i'll put a new clutch in at the same time.
But in the meantime, I spent much of the day having a good old look around the car and sorting a few things.
The PO or the PO before him had installed a toggle switch on the dash and what seemed like miles and miles of cable to operate the fog light! The original switch and wiring were still present so I set about removing the mods and putting it back to how it should be. The only reason the fog light didn't work was because of a poor earth! The poor chap must have spent hours threading all the cable through the car when all he had to do was find a better earth!
