Well I'd like some help.....

I'm thinking I'd quite like to be able to hear some music in the old "Meg" 4x4 but have to take in to consideration that the car gets very wet inside.

As an old git, I know absolutely nothing about subs (yellow marine), woofers and tweeters (dogs and birds). Let not even talk about head - units.

I thought about mounting a player (ipod/cd) up high in the roof and I really liked the transmitter thing you young uns had at the national.

Any advice welcome on what to buy and how to mount a record/cd/ipod/mp3 player in me car.

If your not bothered about getting any head-
unit. Then i would recommend trying the same kind of setup as mine. if you just pick up a cheap 2 channel power amp (mine was £40) you are able to plug a 3.5mm to aux lead into it , which will allow you to play anything with a headphone out socket. (have plugged laptop in when ipod ran out). Then you can hook up a couple of 6x9's in a position of your choosing.

As for where to mount the amp. I have got mine under the rear seat, which of course may be a problem if your car leaks in that area.

Seems a good idea - the car is a 2cv 4x4 (orange one on the front page). It goes into deep water up to and over the seats - as per last years Villevenard, so I think needs roof mounting.

I saw something I think was Russ's car which had speakers in the roof. Are 6x9s speakers? Is that the size?

Rich, take a look at oboes car in dover, could mount the headunit in the same place. Im sure he will be along in a bit to post some pics...

I really know absolutely nothing about car hifi - so needs to be in plain speak.

Cannot mount anything on front shelf either as fills with water there.

Yeah i guess roof mounted would be the best option, in that case a head unit will be smaller and probably easier to mount up there. Probably the more exensive option, and maybe a little more fiddly to get the flashing lighty thing to make noise come out. whereas with a power amp you press play on your device and plug the wire in.
As for speakers size is up to you really, you can choose to sacrifice volume and quality in favor off something that will fit exactly where you want it.

My speakers are on plates welded in to the roof, they could be rivetted in though which would mean no costly painting work, you could spray the plates with a can. The speakers are in pods which are 16cm size, you can buy the pods for various size speakers on ebay for about a tenner. You could also think about marine speakers and head unit, they are more waterproof.

You want to get that bald bearded bloke to take you along to the boat show and have a look at the stereo stuff intended for marine use - BEFORE you hit the Guinness stand.

Have you considered that given how civilised 4x4s tend not to be, you're going to need some considerable welly to drown the car itself out?

I'd go with sccoba's suggestion of an amp with speakers attached.
