 Controle Technique-French MOT.
Just read somewhere, that the CT has suddenly got a lot harder to pass, especially for older cars. Apparently, just a 'spot' of rust is enough to condemn a car and it seems it's due to the French government pushing to get old cars off the road and get people to buy new cars in this recession. Can our friends in France confirm/deny this? If it is true, it's a worrying development. To try and persuade the public with cash incentives, is one thing, to bully them into scrapping a good car by condemning it, is frankly disturbing.

If it's by French standards, and requires close to UK MOT standards of repair, then I'm not convinced that's a bad thing - even for the survival of the A-series. My worry is this.....If it's happened in France, it'll happen here, because the British government always follow stupid EU doctrines, so it'll be forced on us here.
Also, this is something that is very recent, so that photo may be what was passed, but would certainly not pass now(from extreme, to another).....If the situation is true.

What do you mean 'if it happens here'?
As long as your car conforms to the test, and the test is caried out properly, then what do you have to worry about?

If the Government push to introduce 'further measures', shall we say, to 'improve' vehicles on the roads and these 'measures' are unfeasible, a lot more cars will end up being scrapped, not because they are 'unsafe' in reality, but because the government are using a much harder MOT to force old cars off the road and get us all to buy new cars.
I'm not saying it'll happen(yet), but it is something we need to be aware of.

Well, I'm sure you know how governments work, they can think of many ways to shove a big stick in our spokes, more than I can. Certainly, I wouldn't put it passed them, to use the safety/emissions cards. If it means increased tax revenues, they'll use any tactic and the selling of new cars will bring in more taxes, certainly more than they'd get from old cars on the road.

EU harmonisation of roadworthiness tests is not something that's going to increase the strength of the UK MOT in a hurry. We're already well ahead of the majority of the EU - and there's no way that the accession states (and some others...) are going to be made to have THAT big a step in one go - or even in a decade or two. Don't forget that the most recent attempt to harmonise the UK MOT was a move to 4yrs for the first, then every 2yrs, instead of the current 3 & 1. Oh, and that certainly _would_ have passed the CT, because it just wasn't even slightly visible under the big tin "repair" - if only the chassis hadn't started to fold - which, since the side plates have no visible rot at all and the internal webbing only minor surface corrosion, was probably caused more by whatever did this... No need to worry. Don’t listen to maybe Frenchmen telling bullshit. We just CT a couple of cars from the 70’s and had no problems. Rotten floor are still accepted if you cover them with plates securing them with rivets. 1 Charleston customer was asked to remove surface rust on the belly of the chassis, which we did. Scaremongering here in France is a big thing. The French are masters in that mainly because they don’t know and are guessing. Why not blow it out of the water and see how many people they can freak out.
