All MOT'd & Taxed A series are worth £2000: Discuss
Perhaps there's an element of devil's advocate here but let's have a think.
I would argue that my '88 D*lly is by no means a peice of automotive history. I bought my 2cv because she's cheap to run, cheap to insure and a lot of fun.
She's insured to £5000 and I rekon I could probably get £3000 for her so I count myself lucky.
However, supposing hypothetically she got a bit tatty, rusty, neglected. The floors started to go, the panels looked manky, the engine got unreliable, rust got chronic to a point where she wasn't going to pass her next MOT.
Suddenly I'd be looking at a ratty 88 citroen that's going to cost me £400 to get through an MOT and then a lot more to look nice.
Why would I go to the bother when I could trade her in and get £2000 of a shiney little C1?
Would anyone want to buy my ratty 80s citoen for £2000 considering what would need doing?
I know, that if somebody said to me 'hey Sam, you like 2cvs, I'm happy to sell you this ratty 80s car, rather than scrap it, but I want £2k for it because that's what I'd get discounted off a new car if i scrapped it' i would have to say no thanks because it just wouldnt be worth it.
Thankfully, I think few of us are very unlikely to scrap our cars as part of the scheme and thankfully I'm not in this situation.
Therefore it begs the question: Surely there shouldn't be any taxed & MOTd A series for sale for less than £2000? Or are we relying on nice people to sell them at less than that to prevent them being scrapped?

You've got to have owned the car for 12mo. You've got to be able to afford the other £5k+, on top of the car you're weighing in. Perhaps more to the point, you've got to actually WANT a new "proper" car... in which case, why would you be driving a ratty 2cv instead of a cheaper (to buy and run), more reliable, more comfortable, more "normal" car?

I get your point, but as for reliability, I've done 110,000miles of my current 2cv's 180,000miles and I can count the times it's let me down with the digits of one hand, I very often pass a modern car(last week, an Audi A4) sat on the hardshoulder of the M5/M42/M6, last time the 2cv did that, was in 2003. As for cheaper, it costs on average £200 to service a modern car, to keep the manufacturer happy with continued warranty and if something does go wrong and you have to pay for part(s) and labour........ My modern car had it's discs replaced at 50,000, it cost the previous owner something like £250-£300 and when I had the cambelt replaced, it cost me £300, plus service. I think the most expensive part on a 2cv is tyres(£40-unless you have Michelin, £95)or exhaust, however much that is PS:-I'm not arguing, just putting my point across

i dont see my car as a financial investment. i have it for the fun of it. to be honest i couldnt really put a price on it. i dont think a newer "proper" car would make me want to part with it for 2k off, as already said, theres the other 4 or 5k i have to afford for a new one.

Quote: All MOT'd & Taxed A series are worth £2000: Discuss Incorrect. This one was £50, MoT'd and taxed, and was worth almost what I paid for it. Would you pay £2k for it, even now it's not broken? I doubt it. The scrappage scheme makes no odds, there are still plenty of cars for sale under £2k, 2cvs or otherwise. I paid £750 for my 280, the guy could have traded it in and got £2k off some Korean bullshit, but he'd have had to pay the other £6k on top meaning the merc was worth -£6000 to him, plus whatever he'd have got selling it privately for it's actual value. If he didn't have £6000 the car wasn't 'worth' £2000 to him.

But regardless of the crappage scheme, there's no doubting that all peasant cars are getting too expensive. My wife and I bought a Bay Window camper just as they were getting too much (£2,000 - taxed and MOT'd but painted in blue hammerite and white emulsion!) to ensure we'd actually own one.
I now want a 2cv, and the predominant reason is not a romantic one but for the reason they were built in the first place - because we're about to become poor!! I want a group 1 car that does 50mpg+ and is easy to tinker with at home and will cost me less than £1,000. If it wasn't for the 2cv, I'd be buying a cinquecento.
Therefore, when the 2cvs break the boundary of being "reasonable", sadly it will lose some of its engineering integrity... ie it's cheap!
My wife still thinks she'll only get £300 for her bug - it's in tatty but solid enough condition and requires an oil leak fix and new gearbox. SORN and no tax, I know we'll get at least £2k for her - and even I don't feel that it's worth that...
Shame... and no Tata Nano for Europe! I was hoping they'd pay me to hand in an old Mondeo!

Absolutely, with the current prices of 2cvs there's no way I could afford to get into it now, I got mine in 06 for £398.80. I didn't buy her as an investment either, but it is something of a luxury to have a car that's increasing in value when most of my non 2cv friends drive clapped out polos and corsas. I love my car, over my dead body would I trade her in. I really did just start this thread to provoke discussion... i was at work... it was quiet...
