Have you seen that after October when you buy a car the road tax will not be transferred to you it's cancelled the seller gets the refund and you have to tax it presumably before you drive it home. ![]() |

Ridiculous. Que people driving around with no tax after buying a new car.. There must be a leniency period? What are they going to do if the car is sold half way through the month? I doubt if they will give half a month back.. Suddenly it all makes sense ![]() |

Sounds good to me, nice and simple ![]() Quote: Vehicle tax refunds You will no longer need to make a separate application for a refund of vehicle tax. DVLA will automatically issue a refund when a notification is received from the person named on DVLA vehicle register that the: vehicle has been sold or transferred vehicle has been scrapped at an Automated Treatment Facility vehicle has been exported vehicle has been stolen vehicle has been removed from the road and the person on the vehicle register has made a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) person on the vehicle register has changed the tax class on the vehicle to an exempt duty tax class person on the vehicle register has taken out new vehicle tax as part of the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) scheme (Standard Rate Mobility Element) |

If you read the DVLA info in the link above it is self explanatory all can be done on line. So queing at the post office just won't happen. As for losing money half way through a month it's always been the case that you only get full months refund.I can't see any problems with this system only benefits. |

My point was at the moment if a car is sold, the tax is transferred to the new owner so a tax disc is rarely sent back, and a refund rarely has to be made. Using the new system, if a car is sold half way through the month then the new owner will have to buy tax again, and I doubt they will refund the previous owner for the half month he didn't use. So they gain an extra half a months tax per car sold. If this IS the case, then they're going to make millions extra per year. I can't think why else they would be doing it, anyone can check the tax status of a car on the DVLA website anyway. |

To be fair the relatively recent Continuous Enforcement rules for insurance have meant that I've had to chop in the tax - and lose half a month - in the process on the last three vehicles I've sold anyway. You can't keep a vehicle taxed without insurance, so if you buy the replacement first, and swap the insurance over, you have the send the tax back after 14 days or something anyway. |

The changes are understandable I suppose, but it's sad to see the disc disappear. There was a quiet satisfaction with displaying a disc with the Post Office mark of Baltasound (the UK's most northerly Post Office) on my 2CV, and at least when you pay VED at the moment, you get something material to show for it. |

Good riddance to the disc, pain in the arse in my opinion, @pete I hope as many people as possible sell or buy their car as close to the end or start of the month as possible, ![]() |
