Post subject:  2CV in Production Car Trial

Took my newly acquired 2CV D*lly in for its first Production Car Trial today, great fun, need some decent front tyres though to really get it going well off road. Thanks for Russ for a great car!

What Neil said! Glad it did well, I reckon putting pre-70s suspension on it would do the bizzo, it's super supple. What vehicles were you up against and where did you come?

Unfortunately I was too busy driving it to take pics. I'm hoping someone took some and if I get any I'll post them. Came pretty low down in the order (my first real trial apart from a brief outing in the 1931 Morris that I had), all the more experienced people there said that with the right tyres I would have done much better.

I have been offered a pair of 165 15 Uniroyal Rallye 260 tyres which the guy reckons will fit the 2CV wheels and which are on the approved list for production car trials. They sound a bit wide to me, I'll check with my local tyre place as to whether these are practical to fit (if they did fit I'd probably buy a spare pair of wheels and use them only off road for the trials). Anyone have any experience on whether these might be persuaded to fit standard rims?

Anyone have two spare wheels?

I'm planning to campaign the car for the local club's PCT series next year so Sunday was really just getting a feel for what it was all about and seeing how the car performed. now where would I find some pre-70's suspension as Russ has suggested...?

You can fit 165s but I doubt they would improve much, new 135s would probably be better. As for suspension, you want springs and four arms from something with batteurs, and do away with the telescopic dampers, at least, I reckon that'd give it the really nice soft supple suspension of the early cars that will just not stop regardless of ground conditions.*






*All advice is just guesswork based loosely upon experience of abusing old cars.

Put the front down as far as the terrain offers, and therear end as far up as possible in that way your front wheels have the maximum traction

Dont even think about 165 wide
unless you want to fit a new diff!!

or buy a Limited Slip Diff from me!!

Max 155 wide will go OK on a normal rim

Wide tyres do not always do what you think
Thin with good tread is good


soft suspension is good

weight is most important

Soft suspension + long travel?
Altering the bump and droop stop settings will give longer travel, but you need to be careful that the driveshaft inner and outer sections don't part company on full droop...

it might be worth checking the age of those Uniroyals, as it's quite a while since they stopped producing 2CV-size tyres.
