Post subject:  What year is this please?

Hi Guys.

I've just bought my second 2CV in less than a year, not a bad effort in a country where they're rarer than rocking horse poop!

My question, possibly the first of many, is what year would this one have been made?

The chassis number (VIN) is VF7AZKA....KA... (I've dotted out numbers out of paranoia)

It was imported to Oz in 1993. It's a right hand drive ex UK car, but seems to be lacking in the major UK feature, lots of rust!

Can anyone enlighten me as to year of manufacture please?

Cheers, Pottsy

Pottsy,
unfortunately, the parts of the VIN which you've hidden are the ones which matter...

Here are a couple of samples, both cars registered in 1988 in the UK.
VF7AZKA00KA294278 & VF7AZKA00KA266135

Have a look on Jeroen Cats' site for the info you need.

OK, the full number is VF7AZKA0099KA611 which seems to have extra alphabeticals over the numbers you quoted.

I'm having difficulty determining the ORGA number as I only bought the little darling tonight and the photos don't seem to have captured the relevant number.

With the bonnet raised you should see a 4-digit number stenciled on the left hand side of the bulkhead/firewall (looking towards the back of the car) close to the washer bottle-it should be something like 4341- put that number into the link that Ken has posted above and it'll give you the date the car was built.

EDIT-Oooops! Just put more effort into reading the thread and noticed the last bit of the last post  Just got up from 4-hrs in bed after working almost a 24-hr shift in work :D

The only number I can see in the photo is this one, which seems to be 6NW? It looks to be in the right place, but doesn't seem right to me. When I put that in the ORGA checker it comes back with 1977, but that seems to be a default response to an assortment of numbers.

I guess I'll have to wait until I pick up the car to make a closer inspection.

Thanks for the help so far guys.

I've just got the car home and ensconced in the shed (swapping 30 years worth of stories with Alphonse I'll be bound!)

More photos will follow, but the id plate that I couldn't read in the photo shows the VIN to be VF7AZKA0099KA6101. At least this has 17 characters, but the VIN calculators still reckon it's an invalid code.

There are other numbers on the plate. After "Automobiles Citroen" it says PMAC 0120101V

The alleged ORGA number is definitely only 3 characters and is definitely GNW as far as I can tell. Once again, meaningless to the ORGA calculator it seems.

And this car seems to have fancy plastic nut covers rather than hub caps. Does anyone know what year they came along?

And for good measure, if anyone knows how to suss out the code on window glass, here's a photo of the window stencil

Can anyone enlighten me yet?

Cheers, Pottsy

GNW relates to the colour - Bleu Tropiques. This colour was available from late 1983 to mid 1985, IIRC.

The 'Saint Gobain' markings on the glass would point to it being built at Levallois. The plastic nut covers were standard issue.

Some more factoids are coming to light. The full VIN for this car, as stated on the build plate seems to have transposed figures and letters, and the number has been incorrectly copied onto the importation plate affixed in 1993.

All that being said, I'm forming a theory that the year of manufacture is reflected in the engine number?

I've seen two numbers that were 1985 and 1986 respectively and they started with 0905.... and 0906....

Our engine number starts with 0903... Does this mean a 1983 model maybe?

Pictures attached for perusal and maybe decoding.

Any help will be gratefully received.

I'd sussed out that listing before and couldn't quite decode it.

Are the numbers for 1984 sequential? Perhaps 96KA 2001 then carried through to 96KA9999 and rolled over to 97KA0001 then onwards? If so, and since the listing for 1985 shows a different letter sequence, can I assume that our car is was made later in 1984?

(From the serial number listing): 1984 2cv 6 96KA6001 -

The VIN decoders I've tried simply spit back at me when I put in the numbers from the car.

Sorry to be a bother Peter, but we need to pin down a year of manufacture so we can put the beast back on the road over here and maybe do a Raid or two next year.

Thanks for the help so far.

Cheers, Pottsy

Incidentally, we have met. I was at the Mansfield Cit-In with "Moby Dick" my replica (then) of the 1970 Ampol Trial winning car that I used in the 2006 re-run I did with the Peugeot Club.
