I've got a problem. My brother! He's done my spare engine he was borrowing. Went at speed, started knocking and lost some oil on the hard shoulder. Recovery home. I went to look. Got Min on the dipstick and not leaking any oil so I started it up. Bad knocking sound, sounds like the crank but still not leaking oil. Took off the n/s rocker cover and the bottom head nut and washer fell out with the broken part of the stud in the nut. Any ideas what it could be? Gonna swap the engine with another tomorrow and take this apart at some point i think. |

Harry, somebody hasn't been using a torque wrench and that knocking noise you're hearing is the loose cylinder head flapping against the top of the barrel. ![]() There may not be any need to pull the engine, as I've fixed a few of these in-situ. As long as you can get hold of the top end of the broken stud and unwind it from the crankcase, it's possible to fit a replacement. Check the torque of the other nuts by backing them off about 1/2 a turn and tightening them with the torque wrench set to 18 ft.lbs. Also check the security of the 2 'peg' bolts or replace them with Allen screws, M8 x 35mm long, iirc. ken hjbharry wrote: I've got a problem. My brother! He's done my spare engine he was borrowing. Ken, thanks for the quick response. That's the first thing to check tomorrow then. I did check the other head bolts (only with a 12mm spanner) and they were tight, I thought they may have been over tightened that's why one broke?? |

Harry, Check the manifold bolts on that side too. When this happened to me all 4 of them were sheared off ![]() |

I had thia happen to me once too although I blame the 50/50 petrol diesel mix I was running for it happening! I managed to swap the stud in situ and, it was fine. Apparently the only bit of the car that still works properly ![]() |

I used to run my 2CV almost exclusively on petrol that I'd drained from diesel cars when people had "mis-fuelled". Good, cheap times! Mind you, it didn't half smoke! ![]() |
