Post subject:  Towing with a 2cv?

Hey Folks,
I will be moving house within the next year and have been contemplating the idea of getting a small DAXARA/ERDE 147 trailer. I have never towed with a 2cv, how are they?
I seem to recall the manuals saying a max gross weight 400kg can be towed,has anyone exceeded this....? :twisted:

What are the pitfalls? How does a loaded trailer effect the geometry?

Dont exceed 6cwt* on a more severe gradient than 1in6 .....dont ask me how I know this equation .... :oops:
A correctly loaded trailer should'nt affect your geometry too much,the steering can be a little light on roundabouts,but with common sense all is well.
What is more of a problem are the "Richard Craniums" who pull out in front of you if the trailer is unbraked ......'cos they "dont wanna get stuck behind a 2CV" .....I'm sure we're all familiar with these goons,but its twice as bad when you have an unbraked trailer behind you [which the said suicidal "Richard Cranium" cant see,and he does'nt realise that your 2CV doesnt have servo assisted brakes either].

[*6cwt .....is that about about 310kg? ..... I dont do decimal]

"Richard Craniums" HE HE HE, I love it.....In Gaelic we call them "Ceann Risteárd" which equates the the same thing....

310 KG, that sounds about right....hills aren't much fun even with passengers (thats what 1st is for :lol: )

Has anyone done a Raid with a trailer ?????

I remember something about 550kg max braked trailer weight somewhere.

EDIT the car itself is about 550kg...

Haynes suggests max unbraked is 270kg, and max braked is 400kg.

I have a 5 foot by 3 foot unbraked trailer mine tows wonderfully, if however you fill it with stuff braking (and indeed accelerating) becomes a rather geological affair, perhaps best timed with tree rings.

As has been said this is problematic when some muppet wants to pull out infront of you.

Maximum roof loading is 30kg according to haynes also....

I keep meaning to come up with some form of system for hanging breize blocks off the front bumper to improve the braking of my 2cv when its stuffed full of weight, a bit like you see on tractors.

I've had 1,098Kgs of sand in my trailer behind the Acadiane. Slow up hills and a bit scary going down but got home safe and sound. Oh and there was 8 x 35kg bags of cement in the back of the van too. Tough as old boots Acadianes.

Try the A169 [Whitby to Pickering road .....at Sleights] with a Dyane6 and 6cwt [310kg] of trailer-tent .....1st is about as much use as the other three gears.

I tow a 6cwt [310kg?] braked trailer-tent [it's actually a "Dandy Dart" which seems {imho} to be the most popular type of trailer tent used by the 2CVGB membership,judging by the amount of them I see at meetings].
It effectively "loses" me a gear .....
Where I would normally be "off the clock" [70+mph] my car will cheerfully do 60.
Any gradients normally needing "foot flat down" in fourth gear and I'm down to third [45/50mph]
Anything requiring third gear under normal conditions puts me into second ........And anything requiring second puts me into 1st.
If I need 1st ....I forget it,and find a different route ....the car simply will not do it..... [this I know,from experience,having learned the hard way] :oops: .....see above .... :roll:
Having said that,over the last 30 years or so,I've toured most of England with it [Cornwall/Kelso/Wales/Norfolk/South Coast/North Yorkshire] ...using Dyanes [and my 2CV] as tow cars.

In my experience, towing is excellent with a 2cv. I barely notice the difference. With a well balanced boat/trailer, I've never really felt any difference in handling at all. Cornering is still great, as is acceleration and breaking.

My dad tells an excellent story of how he towed an AKS400 30 miles with a 1954 ripple... apparently the going was slow but steady!

The yellow dinghy behind my 2cv is a 10ft Mirror Mk III Explorer built in the 60's weighing about 400kgs. The boat behind the Mehari is my Girlfriends 1970 Miracle - 14ft, about 300kgs (its significantly sportier than the Mirror).
