Y'know what's missing from modern life? Chaps. Rotters. Cads. Bounders. Terry Thomas types, y'know? Upper class delinquents. It's such a shame that in the name of progress, and equality and all that guff we have lost real characters in the public life. I'd sooner spend thirty seconds in the company of Graham Hill and James Hunt than an hour talking their modern counterparts. This isn't just a 'everything was better in the old days' type thought its a pondering that in an effort to sterilise people in the public eye, and especially within sporting arenas, to promote 'all things good' that we've somewhat thrown the baby out with the bath water. We've lost character from our stars, we've given up on amusing quips and our personalities have no personality. I want to see sports stars casting aside their clean cut images and start shagging glamorous women, making jokes about it instead of sheepishly apologising when they're caught doing something wrong. Prince Harry apologised when he was caught bollock naked with some totty in a Vegas hotel room. Apologised! If I was him I'd have had to have issued a statement to the press whilst holding a bottle of bolly, and a big cigar like the 13th duke of Wimbourne, saying something along the lines of 'Haw haw haw, bingo!' Without any sign of regret. Just being a rich arse isn't enough, there's far too many of them around, no humour, no wit, they've already accepted they're in the wrong in their own minds and pretend to give a shit about having made errors. This country has lost that upper class humour and confidence. And it's a bloody shame.

what have you done 'a bottle of' today Russell?

Nothing. It's the tragic state of sobriety which has brought about such a depressing and regret laden post.

George Best's famous quote comes to mind:
"I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered."

Russ, in your present mood this article might give you a laff. It's called How to Drive Fast on Drugs While Getting Your Wing-Wang Squeezed and Not Spill Your Drink. Came out in 1978, written by famous American liberal baiter PJ O'Rourke.

You also might enjoy reading the diaries of Alan Clark. He was a first rate shit, by all accounts, but he was most definitely a scoundrel. Shagged his mistress and both her daughters, the cad.

Join the Union...have a strike and possibly a riot with squaddies in police uniforms and cavalry charges by the mounted police - all part of the remembrance

If there's one thing I can't stand it's moaning about getting more money. If you don't want it James, tell your boss to keep it. He's doing you a favour by allowing you more money, if you have to work harder for it, or longer for it then so be it. Don't you think your boss would love to pay you a fortune? If he could justify it he would do. But my guess is that he can't justify paying you more unless you're earning him more money by turning out more work. I haven't had a pay rise for ages, and I don't get paid o/t when I work in London which is a 13hr day, what choice do I have? If I don't do the work, we don't get paid and the company goes to shit. To and get another job if you don't like it. Me, I'm grateful for the work and so if I get paid more for it or have more to do then I'm not short sighted enough to realise its that work which puts a roof over my head, food on my table and there's a little bit left for enjoying myself.

My views on this subject stemmed from the last two jobs I have had when every Christmas we got a bonus and without fail the miserable selfish greedy ungrateful arseholes I worked with refused to thank the bosses and moaned that it wasn't enough. I cannot abide that kind of thinking.

Quite right, James. There's more to life than working after all. I know times are tough and yada yada yada, but if a few more of us refused to work for the risible wages some employers are offering (£6.75 per hour for driving lorries, for instance) then eventually employers would have to pay more in order to get decent staff. Well, I can dream, can't I? This is all the fault of that Thatcher woman ...
