That's my mom, waving on my behalf! You're not in Hagley are you? A white one was parked up there for a while...

My second Deuche was an A-reg maroon Charleston, bought in 92, which I didn't like much. Too kitsch, and not grubby enough. However, it a) provided me with the adrenaline rush of flipping its bonnet over my windscreen whilst in the outside lane of the M5 at 75mph and b) got me featured in an episode of Top Gear when I came to sell it in 93. They concluded that I was a dodgy dealer flogging a nail. They were wrong. It was a bargain at £800. However, I did get to spend an afternoon sitting in the Charleston smoking ciggies with Quentin Wilson whilst the crew filmed alternative angle shots (whatever they are). Got to hear what everyone on Top Gear at the time REALLY thought of Jeremy Clarkson.

[geek] I watched that episode, infact i have it on tape somewhere! all i can remember is that when they were running through what to look for when buying a 2cv the camera guy shot the bonnet hinge area & Quentin added 'the bulkhead rippling with filler didn't help either'. and i think they finished with 'i think we can do better in our quest for a £800? motor' IIRC it had proper Citroen Accessoirie mat set, and *possibly* rear mudflaps...?! [/geek]  I remember my Dad saying 'that don't look bad to me'!

Might just do that... however, Monday night is football night for me. (Might have to feign injury again.)

Bloody hell! You have an excellent memory, sir. Their quest was a for a £1k motor, actually, but what the heck. I honestly thought that nobody would remember that episode!! I remember being so embarassed by the whole thing that I didn't dare watch it. My dad taped the show, and he still has it somewhere, but I've never watched it. One of his mates rang me 2 mins after the transmission and said "Bloody ell, Al, they stitched you up there mate! You'll never get rid of it now!" Thing was, I'd sold it the week before the broadcast, so I hate to think what the buyers said when they saw their new purchase being ripped to bits by Quentin and his buddies! Bet they choked mouthfuls of tea all over their living room floor and cursed me roundly!
Mates rang me for weeks to take the mick.
The thing was (sorry to go on, but I'm spluttering with indignation that's laid dormant for 18 years) the car was in excellent nick. I'd just put in a new clutch, and the rippling filler stuff was b0110x: I'd just had a 10cmx10cmx2mm steel sheet welded to the floor by a professional, and then I'd zinced and primed it, before filling it to make the patch flush to the rest of the floor. I'd even vacuumed the thing before the film crew turned up. No fag butts, apple cores nor nuffin.
