Max,
have you ever checked the surface temperature of an exhaust with an infra-red thermometer, straight after the engine's been at full throttle for some time?
From quite a few years of 24 hour spannering, I can tell you it's rather hot, after accidentally checking it with my wrist when adjusting a n/s/f damper.
The scar is still there... ;)

A slightly more technical approach here, though.

Look for page 17, Fig.4, a plot of surface temperature against distance along exhaust system.

The exhaust doesn't really get that warm that for down the line, well not in my experience...

Comparing a race exhaust with a standard setup is like comparing apples and pears, since the standard exhaust is cooled quite a bit with forced air.

About the exhaust.... Let's put it this way. I think there will always be a scorched rubber smell inside your car when waiting for the traffic light... :D :D :D

Well I can confirm that either I drive my car like a race car or that naturally the torpedo exhaust cools magically as my new set up is feckin hot at the front end!

I can confirm that smouldering rubber has an interesting smell! Took it up to Liverpool today and at certain times it certainly smelt.....also bloody return spring decided to let go right in the middle of the dock area so had to improvise a solution to a broken end using an already used cable tie by cutting it off and re threading it but it worked and got me home - by heck bloody fuel consumption has plummeted though - now does about 36mpg so don't anyone think it's an eco solution as in larger engine helps pull better and lower stress!
