Looks very much like a bilge blower to me, I'm surprised Dave said his wasn't much good.
Yes the last one is designed for a different purpose, and I expect the blade shape/angle reflects this. But seeing as it draws nearly 10 times the current, I'm sure it'll move a fair amount more air than the bilge blower, but admittedly perhaps not as efficiently.

Better check the rated output of the BMW's alternator, in that case.
It could be a choice between headlamps or heater, if you plan on driving at night in winter... ;)

Has anyone plugged up the outlets for the disc coolers? Must make some difference to the amount of hot air coming into the car?

Would adapting or creating different heat exchangers make any difference? Are the factory-fitted ones the most efficient design for warming the cabin via the engine?

Do you actually suffer? I find mine warms up really quickly just take the foam out of your heater tubes, tape them round the joints and tape over the dump tube outlets. I mean it could be all the hot girls that are in my car but that would only work part of the time.

Thick cardboard in the the roof, blocked off grill and a decent curry the night before, keeps me warm :)
I also have one of those "ecas" blowers in the other car (no suprise there) and found it to be very good, especially for demisting.

During ww2 the germans used to use a weird method of stopping their batteries freezing whilst on th eastern front...a perforated canister kind of like a parafin lamp without the glass...looked like a tall perforated bean tin, they would light the wick inside close it over and place it in the battery compartment.

I believe they were standard issue with the kdf/vw kubelwagons that went east.....a very rare piece of kit now as not many survived.

I'll try to find a pic later.... 8-)

On a side note, my vw trekker has an eberspacher petrol heater and its ace, runs independant of the ignition and its really hot....would be ace on a 2cv but very hard to find cheap/secondhand.....one source might be old scrap ambulances.... I know our newer ones all use eberspacher diesel heaters, the older ldv and fords were petrol and I think they used them too....good luck though.... ;)
