I think the gist of what Matt is saying is exactly how I feel about it at the moment, from what I've seen it's really at it's worst in the UK. The carefree 2cv attitude has been lost and replaced by the mentality matt describes. I think there's a place for everybody within 2cving, and I'd never say that a certain type of person should not have one, I mean, even the most irritating owners have all given us a laugh (even if it's AT them) but those of us like myself that are happy to take a £50 write off, nail some panels on it and have a local yob vandalise it in the name of having a laugh are in the minority. I'm not sure what is happening in other countries but from what I see at 2cv meetings there is much more acceptance between those who have an expensive car they only drive at weekends in the sun, and those who rag the tits off old scrappers. There's much less tolerance in the UK now than there was, I just hope that it changes soon. (any 2cvgb members want to copy/paste the 'dog' argument here?
What's nice is that this turned into a reasoned debate rather than a full on Internet punch up. Well done chaps! Been watching the thread with some amusement as it all also seems very familiar to another world i am involved in (scooters) .. At the extremes you've got your rally going heavy mileage riding hardcore scooterist who rides a 20-30-40-50 year old nail or even a full blown custom they've spent 1000s on to work and at the weekend to a rally at the other end of the country and also to rallies in europe, he looks with disdain on your mid life crisis mod who turns up in a van with his super expensive steed straight off the Heartbeat set in the back that he handed over a credit card to a dealer for and potters around on it a bit with all the right gear on before loading it back in the van or trailer for the night and the drive home. Somewhere in the middle are the owners club type rallies with their quiet chicken-in-a-basket beard and caravan and immaculately restored down to the correct thread amount exposed and the correct color nylocs machines scene, and thats just the tip of the iceberg

You can not tell people how others should use their 2cv and if so, how should they then drive their 2cv. I too know one or two of the so called 'professional class' that now own 2cv's, and I don't care how they drive them frankly, it's up to them. I also know of one person who, having bought one didn't like the '2cv experience', and so traded it in on the scrappage scheme to be crushed. Sadly, also up to him It's evolution, nothing stays the same for very long you just have to enjoy the stuff you do enjoy while you can.

 Re: Can i just say
i must say this is a cracking argument , i know im new to 2cving but i agree with matt and understand were hes coming from. as a Newbie this point was made to me at my first registers meeting last year, there was alot of clean and restored 2cvs that can get dull but luckily there were some with character and unique to them. but when the awards started i was abit annoyed to see 2cvs wining that had been restored or were with low mileage, so when Louise won i was thrilled as thats a REAL 2cv that deserve to be awarded, dirty and different. But of course this is just my opinion

 Re: Can i just say
I can see what you're saying Matt, but (and maybe this is due to a nose-thumbingly rebellious attitude foisted on my by my quasi-Left Wing, card-carrying Trades Union stalwart of a father, God bless him), the world would be a boring place if there no nob-ends to wind up. And these people (again it's my opinion, so shoot me) are, I agree, nob-ends of the highest order. But I WANT them at shows, I WANT them to look disdainfully at my tatty old Snail. I WANT them to write letters of complaint to 2CVGB News....because I enjoy (metaphorically, at least) laughing in their faces. Basically I'm having the best time ever, and couldn't give a tinker's toss-pot about what they think. I'll be at Registers with you guys, dirty dented Duck slammed in the grass, too drunk to give a flying one.

Little Louis, yes thats pretty much what i was getting at.
Brian, i hadnt looked at it like that, you have a good point mate.
Im surprised my little moan created so much opinion. I think its healthy.

 Re: Can i just say
Its a good rant and reading it from the start, no one seems to have said anything that's not correct.
But perhaps the best statement is that its all a self fulfilling prophesy.
As the cars get rarer they are bound to become more collectable and therefore more valuable. This in turn will attract a different kind of owner. It just evolution.
The point of course is that you don't ever have to mix with people who you don't like or understand but neither are they wrong. As someone pointed out there are some very good restorers making a living out of people who want to spend money on their 2CV. That's good for all of us as it keeps expertise going and part prices down.
Most of you know that I run 2CV training courses out here in France. You must take heart that so many people come to them. These are people for whom owning a 2CV is also about getting your hands dirty. So many are new to 2CV's and now have them under their skin. Many are coming back for more advanced training too.
All in all the 2CV community is something to be part of.

But would you agree that prices have risen far out of proportion of relative 'rarity'? A 2cv isn't hard to find or buy in any condition, yet it commands prices that far rarer and more collectable cars do. I think it's more about some people asking a lot for an otherwise good car, then because some mug bought it, everybodies asking a lot, and because things are expensive, they must be rare right? There's your self fulfilling prophecy.

 Re: Can i just say
You could be right Russel. Prices of cars have risen over here too but I do think that its just supply and demand that does it.
