Is that the same sort of affair that's on the front of the engine camshaft Ken?

Thats just a simple thrower where the oil is spun off using centifugal force the gearbox winds the oil back down a'la Archimedes

Re: Gear box story World Meeting
yes it is
On the gearbox input shaft there is a double one , the shaft passes thru quite a long tube, the bit that sticks out and holds the release bearing. There is a scroll that rolls the oil down to a mid point( the 2 large central ribs) where there is a drilling and a return pipe/tube to the main box.
For years id tried to find a simple "add on" seal by trying to introduce some sort of o ring into it but it never worked.
The cam one in your picture is the only bit of the crankcase that isnt mechanically sealed and thats why, when the breather goes or the rings are past their best, you get oily deposits around the points box area before it starts to leak else where. and why you get fume staining in the points box.
Sean ps if your worrying that there is more land than valley thats a perfectly healthy looking cam scroll
