What to bring or what not to bring.
Weight is one of the main problems when raiding. Cars being over loaded with stuff that is never used. For example: 25 cars divided in to 5 groups of 5 cars each. IMO no need to carry 25 complete tool sets. 25 hammers, 25 of everything is very heavy.
Same for parts, 25 coils etc etc. lots of unnecessary weight. Maybe 1 group leader per 5 cars well and correct equipped with tools and spares.
1 2cv can carry spare engine and gear box etc.
On top of all the camping gear and personal stuff leave enough room for the beers. :mrgreen:

That is THE problem for sure. There is going to be somekind of failure of something. When we know cars and people coming, we know parts and can divide them between cars. I know here few men been to Africa, so i will find out.

Ok, but what things should a group of 20-25 cars take with them to get everybody from A to B? What things do break down frequently?

I can imagine that the sand takes a toll from the moving parts...

If we are around 20 cars or less, I'm happy to bring 1 gear box 1 engine and heaps of other spares as I normally do when raiding down under. My Viking Van is always too heavy loaded with tools and parts for nearly everyone. If you prepare the car correctly you should not break down, so little tools and parts are needed. However not being prepared correctly you use most of the time fixing the car, a real tuff time on your self + the other raiders. So prepare well and enjoy a trouble free jouney.

Of course preparation is the key. But when driving 20 +20 year old vehicles trough a desert there is always a chance of breakdowns.

I'll be happy to carry some spares and stuff to disperse the weight a bit.

The risk is minimal if driving according to raod condition. Naturally if driving with your head under your arm, you will smash the car to pieces. :lol:

I have zero raid experience, but when driving at home I always take with me a bobine, fan belt, points, bacoh, tyrips, ducktape, 5l of oil and fuel, swiss knife and a meter of copperwire.

Well if the car is prepared to a very high standard you don't need much. If the coil, points, plugs, fan belt, alternator etc etc is new or near new, there is no need to carry these spares. One problem is parts falling off the car during the raid but checking every single, screw, bolt and nuts should eliminate that. Some people prefer to be independent caring their own parts and to fix their own car, no worries as long as you bring a complete set of tool. The TEC team (Tail End Charlie) will also have what’s needed.
Some ideas here.
In no particular order:
Tent
Extra long solid pecks
Chairs
Table
Torch
Cooking gear
Lighter
Good solid pocket knife
Sleeping gear incl pillows
Insulating underlay
Warm cloth
Camera
Tools & Spares
Small good quality socket set 3/8 drive from 8mm-21mm (including spark plug socket 21mm)
Spanners open ring 8mm-19mm + extra 11mm
Fan removal tool
Screwdriver set
Hammer small
Pliers: multi grip, cut off, etc.
Feeler gauge
Telescopic magnet
Test lamp or multi meter
Grease gun small incl grease
Tow rope
Good quality tie down rope
Wheel nut tool
Jack including wooden base 20x20x3mm
Fuel hose
Spare keys
Small roll of electrical cable and terminal connectors
Assortment: bolt, nuts, screws, washers, pins, clips, splits, clamps etc.
Shovel
Spare rim with good tyre on it. 1 extra tyre and 3 tubes 135-145/15
2 tyre levers
Pump, electrical 12 v
12V Fridge
Toothbrush (cut in half)
Sunblock
Hat
Billy, sugar and tea.
Engine & Gear oil
Ice-cream containers for clean up and small brush
Bucket
Hand cleaner
Rags
Rubber gloves, disposable
Wheel nuts
Cable straps
First aid kit
Scissors
Jerry cans plastic, not metal
Funnel
Hold down straps
Cloth line
"Duck tape" and insulation tape
WD 40 spray small bottle
12v fuses min 10amp
Brake fluid
Tarp for river crossings.
10 liters of water per person
10 liters of cooking/washing water
Insect repellent to both skin and clothing. The most effective repellents are those containing N,N-diethylmetatoluamide (DEET)

a slightly larger wooden base might work better, especially if it's to be used on sand... ;)
